Description
A Volunteer’s Scrapbook: Sketches of a Rifle Volunteers experiences in 1860 Britain
A Volunteer’s Scrapbook is a light-hearted look at the Rifle Volunteer Movement as found in and around Cambridge in 1860. All the pictures were drawn by John Lewis Roget, a student at Trinity College Cambridge until 1853, where he received his Master of Arts and joined the Society of Lincoln’s Inn on April 30th 1853 as a Lawyer.
Clearly a talented artist and ‘whit’, Roget clearly shows very clear knowledge of military reference books and terminology of the time. As such he must have been involved with the Volunteer Movement. Roget’s name does not appear on the cover of the book referring only to himself as the author of ‘The Cambridge Scrap-book’, which is a similar set of sketches about Cambridge University life.
